Are you having thoughts of hurting yourself?

Everyone goes through a difficult time at some point in their lives and you may find it difficult to cope during these times. You might feel helpless, and may have thoughts about hurting or killing yourself. It doesn't mean that you are crazy, or weak, or bad. It only means that you have more pain than you can cope with right now. You can overcome this pain, if you:

  • Talk to a trusted adult or a doctor, nurse, counsellor or psychologist as soon as possible. Tell them exactly what you are thinking. If that is not possible, you can call:

  • Write down all the good things that you have in your life, like your future plans, or people who are important to you. It may feel like you have done nothing good but it is hard to see good things in your life when you having these thoughts.
  • Do something that you find relaxing or comforting. You could also go to a place where there are people around you; it is not a good idea to be alone at this time.
  • If you feel like you can't stop the thoughts, go to your nearest clinic or hospital and tell them what you are feeling.

When these thoughts pass, try to work on finding different options to deal with the pain that made you want to hurt yourself. Learn the warning signs that bring on thoughts of hurting yourself, and don't ever keep those thoughts to yourself. There are people who care and people who can help you; you are not alone!
