Current Affairs: Smoking - The laws you should know

Everyone knows that smoking is bad for your health. It can cause cancer, asthma and heart problems. Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, wants to outlaw smoking in public areas completely to protect your health and well-being.

Here are 3 places where you could be fined for smoking:

  • If there is someone else in the car younger than 12 years of age. Second-hand smoke, or smoke you breathe in from someone smoking near you, is very dangerous.
  • Smoking will only be allowed more than 10 metres away from a doorway, walkway or window, including in shebeens and taverns.
  • In a place with activities for children. This includes schools and crèches.

Remember, it is illegal to buy cigarettes or any other tobacco products if you are under the age of 18.

If you would like help with quitting smoking, visit your local clinic or call the National Tobacco Quit Line at 011 7203145. They can give you information on tobacco and how to stop smoking.
