Current Affairs: What is Sugar Tax?

South African Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, mentioned in his 2016 budget speech that a sugar tax will be added to the cost of sugary drinks in South Africa.

So what's sugar tax?

A tax is when the government increases the price of a product and this increase goes to the government for them to use to pay for services, such as education and health care.

Why add a tax to sugary drinks?

Eating or drinking too much sugar can make you overweight and make you more likely to develop diabetes. Being overweight can lead to higher blood pressure and greater chance of heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.

More than 70% of South African women and 40% of South African men are overweight or obese (very overweight).

Don't wait for the price of sugary drinks to go up when the tax is included – drink beverages with less sugar now. Try drinking more water – it's free and good for you!
