Exercise is smart: How much do you need?

You've heard people say that exercise is good for you. But what do they mean?

Being fit is smart because it has many benefits like:

  • A healthier heart
  • Healthier muscles, bones, and joints
  • Less stress
  • More energy
  • Better sleep
  • Reduced depression and anxiety
  • Ability to think more clearly

Exercising causes your body to produce endorphins [en-door-fins]; chemicals that can help you feel more peaceful and happy. Experts say just 30 minutes of activity or exercise a day will help you produce endorphins.

If you play a sport, this is an easy way to get your daily fix. But if you don't...here's an easy way to get your 30 minutes a day:

  • 10 minutes - Walking/biking to a friend's house
  • +10 minutes - Playing soccer or ball with friends
  • +10 minutes - Dancing

Just make sure you exercise for at least 10 minutes at a time and get your heart pumping. Work out hard enough so that you lightly sweat and your heart rate increases but not so hard that you so out of breath that you can't talk while exercising.
