Fitting in with your peeps

Mngani, it’s normal for people to want to fit in and to be part of cool groups or cliques. However, fitting in can be hard sometimes, because different people like different things. Plus, you might not always get along with everyone – it’s life!

Do you find it difficult to make friends? You’re not alone! Trust us: most young people have times when they feel different or left out. But these feelings pass. These tips can help you find friends who are right for you…

Who are you?

Figuring out who you are is half the battle. Think about what you enjoy doing, what’s important to you (your values), and what you DO and DON’T want in a friend.

Who are these peeps?

This is important to find out, so that you can be part of a group that fits with your lifestyle and values. For example, you might not want to be part of a group that drinks and smokes if you don’t do those things.

Get out there!

Introduce yourself to peeps around you with confidence. Be friendly and open – it gives you the best chance of getting to know people.

Most importantly remember: don’t change yourself to fit in. If a group doesn’t like you for who you are, they aren’t your peeps. Be yourself, and you might soon find a group of friends you like and feel safe around.

Trying to fit in is exhausting, why not be yourself. After all we are different and we come from different walks of life, rather embrace who you truly are.
