How can I cut down my salt intake?

Most people don’t know that eating a lot of salt can be very bad for your health. Eating too much salt can increase your blood pressure which can lead to heart disease (heart attack), stroke, kidney disease and kidney failure. It is important that you watch how much salt you put in your food. Here are a few things that you can do to limit the amount of salt you eat:

  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables – if you buy the frozen vegetables go for the ‘fresh frozen’ ones
  • Eat fresh meat, because processed meats may have added salt
  • Use spices with no salt
  • Avoid bacon as it has lots of salt
  • Avoid take-away foods
  • Rinse canned food before eating
  • Avoid adding salt or sauces to your cooked meals

Hi! If I read labels on packed food, How much salt is recommended?

Hi thank you for your question. No most packages do not show the recommended salt intake although it does show much salt the product has.
