How to exercise regularly and stick to it

We all know exercise is good for us, but for many people it’s hard to stick to an exercise routine. With school, extra-murals, friends, family and sleep, where do you fit in time to exercise?

Here are some ways to make it easier to stick to an exercise plan:

  • Exercise at the same time on the same days of the week (e.g. after school every Monday, Wednesday and Friday).
  • Set yourself a reminder (an alarm on your cellphone, or a note on your mirror) for all the times in the week you want to exercise.
  • Make it short. You don’t have to exercise for an hour at a time – even 30 minutes of exercise can make a difference. It’s actually possible that exercising for a shorter time, but more vigorously, can be better for your fitness than doing something easy for an hour.
  • Have an exercise buddy. If someone else is counting on you to work out with them, you’re less likely to stay on the couch.
  • Once something is a habit, you don’t need to work so hard to remember to exercise. It takes about 21 days to make something a habit – so do it regularly for 3 weeks and it can become a part of your life.
