I keep thinking about hurting or killing myself

We all go through bad times in our lives. Sometimes things go wrong, we fail at something, people hurt us, we lose relationships, someone close to us passes away, or we feel hopeless. In those tough times, we feel so desperate, we just want the pain to stop.

When some people feel down, they have thoughts about doing something to hurt themselves, or even kill themselves. Maybe you've had thoughts like that. Do you get desperate every time something bad happens? If you're having those thoughts every day, or most days of the week, it means you need to ask for help!

Tell someone you trust – a friend or a trusted adult – that you've been thinking about hurting yourself. It also helps if you tell them if you've ever tried to hurt yourself before, so they know how to take care of you.

If there's no one in your life you trust, you may feel it is safer to tell a stranger. That's okay. Here are some people you can talk to:

  • Lifeline: 0861 322 322
  • The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG): 0800 567 567
  • A doctor, nurse, psychologist or social worker at your nearest clinic

Even though it might feel like it sometimes, nothing is worth hurting yourself or killing yourself. Hurting yourself is not a solution – it will never solve the problem. Remember: it won't always feel this way. There is hope and things can and usually get better. The best and bravest thing you can do is tell someone or ask for help.
