I think I'm a bully… how do I stop?

Have you made fun of someone in front of other people, made them cry or called them names? You might be a bully. Bullying is when you do and say hurtful things to someone on purpose.

There are many reasons you could be bullying someone. Some people don’t feel good about themselves or their lives, and use bullying in order to cope with these feelings. You might think bullying is fun. You might not even realise that you are doing it. But if you have ever been bullied yourself, you know that it doesn’t feel great.

If you’d like to stop, noticing and understanding the issues below can help you learn to stop being a bully.

Understand bullying patterns in your life. Do you hurt others because you're being hurt? People usually bully others after they have seen someone else do it. If you are being bullied yourself, speak to a trusted parent or teacher immediately.

Recognise what you are insecure about. People bully others when they're not confident about some part of themselves.

Remove yourself from groups of people who are bullying others. It’s also bullying if you are watching or helping other bullies.

Get professional help. If you feel you can't control your bullying on your own, it’s best to talk to a social worker or counsellor about your problem. Together you can come up with ways you can change your behaviour.

How to stop being a bully before it gets to far

Well done for admitting that you may be a bully, that is a big step. You can talk to a counselor at your school or a counselor at your local clinic. If you don't want to speak to a counselor you can talk to a trusted adult that will be able to guide you and help you.
