Is it OK for girls to masturbate?

Masturbation means touching your private parts in a way that feels good. It is a safe way to get sexual pleasure without having to worry about unwanted pregnancies, STIs or HIV. People usually try it for the first time when they reach puberty, or when they become curious about sex and sexuality.

Masturbation is sometimes seen as wrong or unhealthy for girls to do. People don’t like to talk about it because it may be a touchy subject, even though it’s completely natural.

Let’s look at the reasons why masturbation is good for you:

v  Masturbation is a stress reliever and can improve your mood.

v  Masturbation can help you become sexually comfortable and confident with your body.

v  Masturbation allows you to get to know your own body. You can discover what you like and what you don’t like.

Sex toys can be helpful during masturbation (as long as you don’t hurt yourself or leave the toys inside your vagina).

Masturbation only becomes a problem if it starts to affect your day-to-day life. For example, it shouldn’t affect your schoolwork or your social life to the point where you feel like you need to masturbate all the time.

Remember, as long as you are choosing it and enjoying it, masturbation is normal and natural. Whether you feel you do or don’t want to masturbate, it’s your choice – you have control over your own body. There is no age to stop masturbating. You stop when you want to.
