Pave the Way for an HIV free Generation

My name is Simiso Msomi, I'm now 26 years old and I was born, raised and still reside in Durban. I live at home with my family of five. I'm an electrician by profession.

When I was 19 years old I started dating this beautiful girl. We fell deeply in love and as time went on, we started having unprotected sex. Of course she was frequently testing, and the results always came back negative, so I thought I was also negative. When I was 21 years old, I went for my first ever HIV test and the results came out positive.

I was shocked, in disbelief, angry and had a lot of resentment towards myself. I kinda lost myself for a bit, and started looking at myself differently. I became depressed and negative about life until I decided that I needed help to deal with all of this, and I got the help. I monitored my health, joined the gym, gained my confidence back and educated myself about this HIV, my HIV. I claimed back control of my life. I started my treatment 3 years ago and my health has improved.  My viral load is undetectable.

I now give help to newly infected people, because I know what's it's like to be in that dark space when you get your diagnosis. I also teach youth about preventative measures when it comes to HIV, like medical male circumcision and proper condom usage. I guess you could call me an activist. But what is most important to me is HCT (HIV counselling and testing).  I encourage everyone I meet to test for HIV so that if you are positive you will find out early about your diagnosis and be treated. So I urge and encourage people reading this to please go for an HIV test and pave the way for a HIV -FREE generation.
