Sex toys – the do’s and don’ts

Different people like different things. And this is also true when it comes to sexuality. Some people use sex toys and some don't. Using sex toys is a personal choice, and there is nothing wrong with it. Sex toys can be used for masturbation or for pleasure with a partner. Just make sure that if you’re going to use them with your partner, you and your partner are both comfortable and have consented.

There are different types of sex toys: for males, for females, electronic or non-electronic. They come in different shapes, sizes and colours. Below are some of the most common:

  •  Vibrators - These use batteries or are electrically charged. They come in different styles and for different purposes. They can be used by both males and females.
  • Dildos - These are usually made from silicone, rubber or plastic, and can be used for vaginal or anal sex. They do not vibrate.
  • Strap-ons -These are dildos that are worn around the waist. They can be used for both vaginal and anal sex.

If you choose to use sex toys, remember these five must-do’s:

  1. Always use a water-based lubricant.
  2. Do not share sex toys with your friends as it could lead to infections like STIs.
  3. If you are sharing sex toys, use a condom for each encounter.
  4. Do not move from anal sex to vaginal sex with the same toy. This can cause bacteria to spread.
  5. Always keep your toys clean to avoid infections. Clean your toys with warm water.

Sex toys are meant to be used for fun and pleasure, on your own or with your partner (if they are fine with it). Some people can even have more intense orgasms when using sex toys. BUT only use sex toys if you feel ready and comfortable. To find out if you are ready for sex, read Sex on the mind: Are you ready?
