Tips on how to use public transport and stay safe

As you grow older, you may feel more independent and want to start travelling alone. This means you may be using public transport like taxis, busses, cabs or trains. This can feel exciting or scary the first time you do it.

Here are some tips that will help you stay safe while using public transport:

  • Plan your trip: make sure you have all the information you need, like where to find the transport, what time it comes, where to get off, and how much it costs. You can even write all of this down so that you don’t forget.
  • If you are using a cab, make sure it’s licensed.
  • If you are using a cab alone, sit in the back so that it’s easy for you to jump off in case you need to.
  • If you are taking the bus or train, make sure that you know what time it comes.
  • It’s a good idea to sit next to the driver in the taxi and let them know where you are going, so that they can drop you off there.
  • Always look around you so that you can spot your destination and be ready to get off.
  • Put your bag on your lap and keep your wallet in the bag.
  • Always tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
  • Try not to travel alone at night.
  • Avoid being the only passenger in a taxi. Get someone to come with you or wait for other passengers.

If you follow these tips, you should be all set for your first trip alone. For more information connecting with others, check out the Your Peeps section on B-Wise.
