I'm worried about the spread of Cancer, have just discovered that someone close to me has cervix cancer. She is the first one to contract cancer in the family. was of the view that you contract it if it has been there in the family before or if you smoking. well she is not and no-one in the family was diagnosed before. What are the causes of cancer.

B-Wise Expert Expert 20 April 2019 12:43

Hi there, Cancer can be treated in a lot of ways, depending on where in your body the cancer is, and how serious it is. But the sooner you treat it, the better. That's why girls and women should have pap smears with their primary care doctor or gynaecologist every year, as soon as they start having sex. A pap smear is a way of checking for cervical (and other types of) cancer. Learn more https://bwisehealth.com/article/i-have-hpv-what-should-i-do-can-i-get-rid-of-it

How does Prep work for gay men?

B-Wise Expert Expert 29 March 2019 11:21

Dear Anonymous. Anyone who is HIV negative can take PrEP. PrEP stands for Pre-exposure Prophylaxis. “Prophylaxis” means that it can prevent you getting an illness, which in this case is HIV, and “Pre-exposure” means that you start taking the medication before you are exposed to the illness. So PrEP is the medication an HIV negative person can take before they are exposed to HIV, which can help prevent them getting HIV.  People usually take PrEP to prevent them against contracting HIV through sexual intercourse with an HIV positive person or when the person’s HIV status is unknown.

When you take PrEP you need to see a doctor regularly to monitor you and to do blood tests to make sure you do not get any side effects from the medication. Remember that PrEP is not 100% effective, so you should still use condoms to help prevent you from getting HIV. It is even better for you to also know your partner’s HIV status and for them to be on ARVs themselves if they are HIV-positive. If you think you might be at risk of getting HIV, you can ask your GP for more information about PrEP.

after having sex I always get a abscess in my vagina does it mean I have STI's

B-Wise Expert Expert 1 April 2019 14:40

Hey there, thank you for your question. It could be any reason why you may have an abscess it is best that you go visit your local doctor so you can get the right treatment before it gets worse.

B-Wise User Anonymous 10 March 2019 10:27

Hi I had sex with my partner but after I was bleeding what could be the course of the bleeding

B-Wise Expert Expert 11 March 2019 11:06

Dear Anonymous. There could be a number of reasons for this. Firstly, his penis may be larger than before and may have hurt the wall of your vagina. If this is the case, it’s best you try a different sexual position that doesn’t allow for deep penetration (when penis deeply enters the vagina). Secondly, it could be that the wall of your vagina was dry and you were not sufficiently aroused before you started having sex. You may then be are suffering from vaginal dryness. Check out this article for more information: Why dry sex is not a good idea . To improve this, you could use a lubricant such as KY jelly. Lastly, you may also have a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or vaginal condition which got worse during sex. It’s best you visit your local clinic and get tested for STIs. Use our Clinic Finder to help you find a clinic near you.

If ur staying with some1 who is hiv positive, how can i protect myself when am with him?

B-Wise Expert Expert 11 March 2019 12:06

Dear Anonymous. Gloves should be worn during contact with blood or other body fluids that could possibly contain visible blood, such as urine, feces, or vomit. Cuts, sores, or breaks on the exposed skin should be covered with bandages (this applies to you and your HIV+ family member). Hugging, holding hands, giving massages, and many other types of touching are safe. Washing your hands is the single best way to kill germs for the both of you so wash your hands after you go to the bathroom and before you fix food. If you have any cuts or sores, especially on your hands, you must take extra care not to infect the person living with HIV or yourself. A person living with HIV should not share razors, toothbrushes, tweezers, nail or cuticle scissors, pierced earrings or other pierced jewellery, or any other item that might have their blood on it. Check out our HIV section  for more information.

How can we prevent HIV

B-Wise Expert Expert 11 March 2019 13:23

Dear Anonymous. Get tested and know your partner’s HIV status. Talk to your partner about HIV testing and get tested before you have sex. Use a new condom every time you have anal or vaginal sex. Limit your number of sexual partners. The more partners you have, the more you are at risk of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Check out our HIV section  for more information.

How can I prevent HIV ?

B-Wise Expert Expert 8 March 2019 22:12

Dear Anonymous. Good question! The most effective way to treat HIV is by suppressing the virus using antiretroviral therapy (ART). This is a daily pill, taken for the rest of the person’s life that suppresses the virus. Here are two informative articles that will give you more information: HIV & AIDS: Get smart & know the facts! and How do you get HIV?

B-Wise User OBED19 8 March 2019 09:53

What you should know Know how HIV is affecting your body by doing a simple blood test, called a CD4count. It will be done soon after you tested positive, and depending on the results it will be repeated every 6 months. CD4 cells are the soldiers of the immune system and they become damaged by HIV, which limits their ability to defend your body.

B-Wise Expert Expert 9 March 2019 00:23

Dear BED19. Thanks for sharing this valuable information with us.

B-Wise User Simango 5 March 2019 21:46

Why do we have to delay sex...? Why is necessary to use condom when having sex with the person you living with for very long time and trust him or her...? What is important to know your partner status and you surely that you are protected from him or her but is your partner...?

B-Wise Expert Expert 14 March 2019 18:10

Dear Anonymous. The decision to have sex is a very personal choice. No one can tell you when you’re ready. Delaying means waiting until you are ready for sex. There is no age or time that’s right for everyone when it comes to being sexually active. That means that the right time for others might not be right for you. Starting to have sex later can keep you safe: it protects you from getting HIV and STIs, as well as unplanned pregnancies. It is important to use a condom every time you have sex (even if you trust your partner) so that you can help protect yourself and your partner against STIs and pregnancy. Even one time of not using a condom can put you at risk.

B-Wise User Tshange16 5 March 2019 15:40

If your penis is itching and it has sores outside what does that mean.... And there's something yellowish and it is sticky!! And what should i do!?? I'm worried about this!!

B-Wise Expert Expert 11 March 2019 20:16

Dear Anonymous. Itchiness and sores can be caused by many things. It is a common symptoms of an STI. It’s best you to visit your nearest clinic to get tested and know if there are any possibilities for you to have an STI. You can use our clinic Finder to help you find a clinic near to you. You can also read more about STI in our STI section and get informed about STIs.

B-Wise User Tumelo19 5 March 2019 13:00

If a girl vomit always wen u done having sex wat does it mean

B-Wise Expert Expert 13 March 2019 13:13

Dear Anonymous. There could be many reasons for this. Vomiting immediately after sex could be a sign of pregnancy. However, the body doesn't have enough time to react to produce that symptom due to a pregnancy resulting from that sex. Most women don't experience pregnancy-related symptoms until week five or six of pregnancy. Sometimes pain if present at the time of sex can cause vomiting. Talk to your partner about your concerns and encourage her to go to her nearest clinic for a full examination. Use our Clinic Finder to help you find a clinic near to you.

B-Wise Expert Expert 14 March 2019 18:17

Dear Anonymous. Sex doesn’t need to be a part of every relationship. There's nothing wrong if you decide to wait. The decision to have sex is a very personal choice. No one can tell you when you’re ready. And having sex can have big effects on your body and your life, so it’s something to take very seriously. Is it possible to test HIV positive then when you go back after 3 months it's negative?

B-Wise Expert Expert 14 March 2019 18:27

Dear Anonymous. There's a period of time after a person is infected during which they won't test positive. This is called the HIV "window period." The window period can be from 10 days to 3 months, depending on the person's body and on the HIV test that's used. During that time, you can test HIV-negative even though you're HIV-positive.

B-Wise User Isak 5 March 2019 11:19

Does HIV AND AIDS be cured

B-Wise Expert Expert 14 March 2019 19:15

Dear Anonymous. There is no cure for HIV, although antiretroviral treatment can control the virus, meaning that people with HIV can live long and healthy lives. Check out our HIV section  for more information.

B-Wise User Shepherdt 5 March 2019 10:10

Hello If you find that a person is non reactive, when must he/she come back for another test?

B-Wise Expert Expert 14 March 2019 19:25

Dear Anonymous. If you get an HIV test within 3 months after a potential HIV exposure and the result is negative, get tested again in 3 more months to be sure. If you learned you were HIV-negative the last time you were tested, you can only be sure you’re still negative if you haven’t had a potential HIV exposure since your last test. If you’re sexually active, continue to take actions to prevent HIV, like using condoms the right way every time you have sex and taking medicines to prevent HIV if you’re at high risk.

Why is it important to get circumsised what does getting circumsised help with?

B-Wise Expert Expert 14 March 2019 19:49

Dear Anonymous. There are many benefits! It is easier to keep the penis clean. Circumcision lowers the risk of cancer of the penis. It lowers the risk of HIV and STIs, though it doesn’t remove the risk entirely, so circumcised men should still use condoms. Males who are circumcised have a lower risk of getting a urinary tract infection. Male medical circumcision can also protect female partners against cervical cancer.

B-Wise Expert Expert 25 February 2019 09:00

Hi there. Sorry to hear you are going through this. It sounds like this keeps happening and it doesn’t get resolved. It might be helpful to ask yourself: what is keeping you in this relationship? What are the good things about it? Are they worth the pain and anger you are going through? If the answer is yes, and you want to stay with your boyfriend, it would be a good idea to find new ways to show him what you need from him. If not talking isn’t showing him what you need, how can you tell him clearly that you need support, and that you’re not comfortable with him talking to other girls in the way he does? Try to show him why it hurts you, rather than just why it angers you. He doesn’t have to do what you ask – that’s his choice – but if he keeps doing these things knowing they hurt you, you also have choices. Counselling can also help you to work through your choices and manage your anger.

What cause prostate cancer

B-Wise Expert Expert 25 February 2019 15:32

Dear Anonymous. Prostate cancer begins when cells in the prostate gland start to grow uncontrollably. The prostate is a gland found only in males. It makes some of the fluid that is part of semen. The size of the prostate changes with age. In younger men, it is about the size of a walnut, but it can be much larger in older men. Researchers do not know exactly what causes prostate cancer. But they have found some risk factors and are trying to learn just how these factors can cause prostate cells to become cancer. Risk factors include age, family history, gene changes, obesity, smoking and STIs.

B-Wise Expert Expert 5 February 2019 13:48

Hi there, thank you for your question. Your partner is luck to have someone like you who cares so much. It is possible that the treatment is not agreeing to your partner. It is best that your partner talks to a doctor or nurse so he can get the right treatment

B-Wise User Anonymous 20 January 2019 16:13

Hi my partner is not taking his treatment when I ask him why is he doing so he keeps arguing with me telling me that the treatment is not treating him well

B-Wise Expert Expert 23 January 2019 09:11

Hi there. Treatment can have lots of side effects, and some of these can be really difficult to deal with (e.g. nausea, vomiting, dizziness, tiredness). Sometimes these side effects go away after someone has been taking their treatment regularly and correctly for a few weeks. But if the side effects don’t get better after that, it’s a good idea for him to go back to his doctor and tell them exactly what side effects he is having. They will be able to help and support him. Not taking treatment means their illness doesn’t get treated and they may get sicker, and eventually they may have to go onto other treatment which has even worse side effects. But in the end you can’t change someone’s mind if they don’t want to change their mind. So do what you can, but make sure you are looking after yourself: use a condom every time you have sex and get tested regularly for HIV.

Hi I'm HIV positive and I want a baby what must I do and are the any changes to fall pregnant

B-Wise User Anonymous 30 December 2018 19:34

I was tested for TB this year, on 4/9/2018 got my results saying I'm positive and I was given the medication, that very same day I cough again and got my second results on 12/09/2018 saying I'm negative.how is this possible? Now at the clinic my file went missing it been a month now, when I go there to take my medication they ask me which medication I'm taking. I'm confused really so I decided to stop taking this medication coz I don't know what going on and I'm pregnant.

B-Wise Expert Expert 4 January 2019 13:03

Hi there, not everyone with TB will cough the TB out. This is called a false negative test result. The fact that you did produce a sputum containing the TB the first time is sufficient to diagnose you with TB, and this means you have to complete at least 6 months of the appropriate TB treatment. Not completing the required regimen may lead to drug resistance which is much harder to treat and takes longer to cure (sometimes two years of treatment or more!). So rather be safe and finish the treatment.

B-Wise User Anonymous 30 December 2018 19:12

Hi

B-Wise User Anonymous 28 December 2018 14:10

Is it normal to be in denial if u find out your are HIV positive and if the laboratory tests comes back positive for HIV are they 100% that I have the virus? And is it ok to start ARVs if your CD4 count is 687 ? Please help.

B-Wise Expert Expert 2 January 2019 09:29

Hi there, Yes, many people feel denial when they first find out that they are HIV positive. It is important to receive correct counseling and medical care. Positive rapid HIV tests are about 96-100% accurate (specific) for HIV. That is why 2 tests are always done to confirm that the result is correct. If your CD4 count is 687 it is good as it is within the normal range. This means that you are not likely to catch opportunistic infections.  Studies have proven that it is best for everyone with HIV to start taking ARVS regardless of CD4 count as people live longer and have less illnesses.
