Termination of Pregnancy

Abortion in South Africa: It’s your right

In South Africa, abortion is legal and accessible under the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1996. You have the right to choose whether to continue or end a pregnancy safely, confidentially, and without judgment.

I want to get an abortion. Where do I start?

If you are considering an abortion, start by visiting a public clinic, community health center, or a designated hospital where abortion services are provided. You can also seek help from trained healthcare professionals or organizations that offer reproductive health services. They will provide counseling, explain your options, and help you understand the procedure suitable for you.

  • You can have an abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy without giving a reason.
  • Between 13 and 20 weeks, abortions are allowed for socio-economic or medical reasons.
  • After 20 weeks, abortions are only allowed if the pregnancy endangers your life, health, or if the fetus has severe abnormalities.
